Destin Learning Course

Build and Deploy Full-Stack Web Apps with Python Flask

Learn Flask from first route to production deployment — building real, database-backed web apps and REST APIs along the way.

This course takes you from understanding how the web works to shipping a production-ready Flask application with user authentication, a relational database, and a tested, structured codebase. You'll finish with a complete task manager app you built yourself — not a tutorial clone, but a deployable project. Every concept is applied immediately through hands-on labs that mirror real development workflows.

What you'll gain

Build Real Apps, Not Toy Examples

Each lab builds on the last, culminating in a multi-feature task manager with authentication, database persistence, and blueprint-based structure — code you can show and deploy.

Cover the Full Development Stack

You'll work across routing, templates, forms, sessions, REST APIs, databases, authentication, testing, and deployment — the full range of skills a Flask project actually requires.

Deploy with Confidence

The final module walks you through preparing your app for production, switching from the dev server to Gunicorn, and understanding your deployment options — so the course doesn't stop at "it works locally."

Who Introduction to Web Development with Python Flask is for

Who this course is for

Python Developers Entering Web Development

You're comfortable writing Python scripts or working in data or automation roles, but you haven't built a web app before. This course gives you a structured path into Flask without assuming prior web development experience.

Computer Science Students

You've studied programming fundamentals and want to apply them to a practical, hireable skill set. By the end, you'll have a working, authenticated web application and REST API to reference in interviews and portfolios.

Backend Developers Expanding Their Stack

You work in another language or framework and want to add Python web development to your skill set. This course moves efficiently through Flask's ecosystem, covering the patterns and tooling used in real Python backend projects.

What you'll learn

The course opens with web fundamentals and Flask basics, then builds systematically through routing, Jinja2 templates, form handling, and session management. From there, you move into REST API design and database integration with Flask-SQLAlchemy before combining everything into a full CRUD web application. The final modules address user authentication, testing, application structure with blueprints, and production deployment — so the learning arc mirrors how a real Flask project is actually built and shipped.

Learn by doing

Every module includes a hands-on lab where you write and run working Flask code in a Linux terminal environment using tools like Flask-WTF, Flask-SQLAlchemy, Flask-Login, GDB, and Gunicorn. Labs are cumulative — the task manager you start building in Module 8 is the same app you authenticate, refactor, test, and deploy by the end of the course.

Build and Run Your First Flask App
  • Install Flask, write a minimal Flask application with a single route that returns "Hello, World!", and run it with the development server bound to host 0.0.0.0 on port 8080
  • View the running app live in the lab's App tab and confirm changes to the route's return value appear after restarting the server
Build a Multi-Route Greeting App
  • Build a Flask app (host 0.0.0.0, port 8080) with at least four routes, including a dynamic route that captures a name from the URL and a route that reads a query string parameter
  • Use the App tab to test each route by editing the browser URL directly, confirming dynamic segments and query strings are parsed correctly
Build a Multi-Page Site with a Shared Layout
  • Create a base.html layout with a navigation bar and at least two child templates that extend it, styled with a static CSS file, served on host 0.0.0.0 port 8080
  • Pass dynamic data from a view function into a template using Jinja2 loops and conditionals, and view the rendered pages live in the App tab
Build a Feedback Form
  • Build a Flask app (host 0.0.0.0, port 8080) with a Flask-WTF form collecting a name, email, and message, validated server-side with at least two validators
  • On successful submission, display a flash message confirming receipt and redirect back to the form; on invalid input, redisplay the form with inline error messages
Build a Session-Based Shopping Cart
  • Build a Flask app (host 0.0.0.0, port 8080) where visitors can add items to a cart stored in the session, view the cart's contents, and remove items
  • Add a "clear cart" route that empties the session data, and confirm in the App tab that the cart persists across page navigations but resets after clearing
Build a JSON REST API
  • Build a Flask REST API (host 0.0.0.0, port 8080) backed by an in-memory list of items, with GET/POST/PUT/DELETE endpoints returning correct JSON and status codes
  • Test every endpoint from the terminal using curl with appropriate flags for each HTTP method, including a request with an invalid ID that returns a 404
Persist the REST API to SQLite
  • Convert Module 6's in-memory REST API to persist data in a SQLite database using Flask-SQLAlchemy, with a model class replacing the in-memory list
  • Confirm data survives a server restart by adding a record, stopping and restarting the Flask app (host 0.0.0.0, port 8080), and retrieving the same record via GET
Build a Task Manager Web App
  • Build a full CRUD web app (host 0.0.0.0, port 8080) for managing tasks, with database-backed list, create, edit, and delete pages using templates and Flask-WTF forms
  • Add a search box that filters the task list by keyword and verify the full create-edit-delete flow live in the App tab
Add Authentication to the Task Manager
  • Add user registration and login to the task manager (host 0.0.0.0, port 8080) using Flask-Login and hashed passwords, associating each task with the user who created it
  • Protect the create/edit/delete routes with login_required and confirm one user cannot edit or delete another user's tasks
Add Error Pages and a Test Suite
  • Add custom 404 and 500 error pages to the task manager and configure logging that records each request to a log file
  • Write a pytest test suite using Flask's test client covering at least four routes, including one authenticated route and one expected-failure case
Refactor the Task Manager into Blueprints
  • Refactor the task manager (host 0.0.0.0, port 8080) into at least two blueprints (e.g. auth and tasks) with an application factory function and a Config class
  • Move the SECRET_KEY and database URI into environment variables loaded at startup, and confirm the refactored app still runs correctly in the App tab
Final Project: Production-Ready Packaging
  • Add a requirements.txt, a Procfile or equivalent start command, and run the finished task manager app under Gunicorn (bound to 0.0.0.0, port 8080) instead of the Flask development server
  • Write a short deployment checklist in the project README covering debug mode, secret management, and the production WSGI server, then publish the project to a public GitHub repository
