What you'll gain

Write Code That Solves Real Problems

Every concept is paired with a hands-on lab — from a command-line task manager to a bank account class system — so you practice skills in context, not in isolation.

Build a Portfolio Before You Finish

You'll publish a complete Python project to GitHub with a professional README by the end of the course, giving you a concrete artifact to show employers or collaborators.

Understand Python, Not Just Syntax

Modules on error handling, code organization, and OOP fundamentals teach you how to structure programs that are readable, maintainable, and ready for real-world use.

Who Foundations of Python: From Beginner to Job Ready Developer is for

Who this course is for

Early-Career Software Developers

You have some exposure to programming concepts but haven't yet built complete, working Python applications. This course gives you the structured foundation and portfolio project to move into Python-based roles with confidence.

Technical Professionals Switching Stacks

You work in a technical field — IT, data, engineering, or QA — and want to add Python to your skill set. You'll learn the language through tools and projects that map directly to professional workflows.

Computer Science Students

You understand programming theory from coursework but want more hands-on experience building complete applications. This course bridges the gap between academic exercises and the kind of code you'll write on the job.

What you'll learn

The course opens with Python fundamentals — environment setup, data types, and control flow — before moving into functions, collections, and text processing. From there, you'll work through file handling, exception management, and modular code organization, building practical skills at each stage. The final modules introduce object-oriented programming and culminate in a multi-session capstone project that ties every concept together. You'll finish with a working application, a GitHub repository, and a clear path for what to learn next.

Your Python Career Path

Learn by doing

Each of the twelve hands-on labs is designed to produce a working program you write from scratch in a standard Python environment. You'll use tools including the Python interpreter, the command line, and Git — the same tools used in professional development. Labs build on prior concepts, so each project reinforces what came before while introducing something new.

Build a BMI Calculator with Input Validation
  • Write a Python program that prompts the user for height and weight, calculates BMI, and displays the result with a weight category
  • Implement input validation using conditionals and type conversion to handle invalid entries without crashing
Create a Number Guessing Game with Validation
  • Build an interactive number guessing game using while loops, conditionals, and the random module that gives the player hints and tracks attempts
  • Add input validation to reject non-numeric entries and out-of-range guesses, keeping the loop running until valid input is provided
Build a Temperature Conversion Utility Library
  • Create a collection of well-documented functions that convert between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin, each with clear parameters and return values
  • Write a menu-driven driver program that calls the library functions, demonstrating proper function design, docstrings, and scope
Create a Text Analysis Tool
  • Build a program that reads a block of text and reports word count, character count, most frequent words, and sentence count using string methods
  • Use string formatting and f-strings to display a clean, readable summary report of the analysis results
Build a Task List Manager
  • Create a command-line task manager that uses a list to store tasks, supporting add, remove, complete, and display operations
  • Use list comprehensions and tuple unpacking to filter and display tasks by status, demonstrating the practical difference between lists and tuples
Create a Student Grade Management System
  • Build a grade tracker using a dictionary of student names mapped to lists of scores, supporting add, update, and average calculation operations
  • Use sets to track which students have submitted all assignments and demonstrate set operations to identify missing or duplicate submissions
Build a Contact Management System with File Storage
  • Create a contact manager that saves and loads contacts to a CSV file, supporting add, search, and delete operations that persist between program runs
  • Use context managers and proper file path handling to safely read and write data, demonstrating real-world file I/O patterns
Create a Robust Calculator with Error Handling
  • Build a four-function calculator that uses try/except blocks to handle division by zero, invalid input, and unexpected errors without crashing
  • Implement a custom exception class for out-of-range inputs and use finally to ensure cleanup actions always run regardless of errors
Build a Multi-Module Utility Application
  • Organize a utility application across multiple Python modules — a math helper, a string helper, and a main driver — demonstrating import patterns and package structure
  • Use at least two standard library modules (such as os, math, or datetime) and one third-party package installed via pip within the application
Create a Bank Account Class System
  • Design and implement a BankAccount class with instance attributes for balance and owner, and methods for deposit, withdrawal, and transfer
  • Override __str__ and __repr__ methods to produce meaningful output and use class attributes to track the total number of accounts created
Final Project: Build a Personal Finance Tracker
  • Build a complete personal finance tracker that records income and expense transactions, calculates balances, and persists data to a CSV file across sessions
  • Apply planning, modular code organization, and refactoring techniques to produce a clean, well-structured application that integrates concepts from across the course
Publish Your Project to GitHub and Create Your Portfolio
  • Initialize a Git repository for your Personal Finance Tracker, write a professional README following PEP 8 conventions, and push the project to a public GitHub repository
  • Identify two Python career paths of interest and outline a 90-day learning plan with specific resources, projects, and milestones for continued growth

Destin Learning

Destin Learning creates practical, project-driven courses for developers, IT professionals, and tech enthusiasts who want to build real skills — not just pass a certification exam.

Every course is built around hands-on labs, working code, and real-world tools. Our students learn by doing: writing programs, configuring systems, and solving problems in environments that mirror what they'll encounter on the job.

Our courses cover systems programming, Linux administration, cloud infrastructure, AI and machine learning, and foundational computer science — all taught with the same philosophy: understand it deeply, build it yourself, and know why it works.
